National Institute of Water and Sanitation
The Government of India has approved Gramalaya as one of the National Key Resource Centre (KRC) for providing training and capacity building support to Government Officials and NGOs working in the sector.The successful intervention in the rural, urban and coastal areas (tsunami affected fishermen villages) during the last three decades, innovations like child friendly toilets, community managed pay and use toilets systems, school health intervention, toilet technology park, introduction of water saving toilet pans for rural and baby pans, Selective documentation system led Gramalaya to be one of the national and international resource organizations for water and sanitation activities. As a result of the 33 years of hard work and commitment to the vision, Gramalaya is visited every month, weekly by many international organizations, national organizations and Government departments, NGOs, researchers and academicians. Many NGOs are approaching Gramalaya for giving training on Water and Sanitation, community development etc. including Government department officials and local community based organizations. NGOs abroad are frequently visiting Gramalaya rural and urban projects for replication in their local regions. Gramalaya is having well equipped infrastructures like simple accommodation and boarding, internet facilities, audio-visual equipments such as LCD projector in the Training centre established at the Kolakkudipatti village about 45 km. from Tiruchirappalli City. The NIWAS training centre is located in a serene atmosphere facing Kolli Hills and Green Hills and about 3 km away from the River Cauvery, the lifeline of millions of people. The training centre location itself is enabling nearby communities to visit the toilet models in the Centre for Toilet Technology adjacent to the NIWAS building, stay in the training centre for getting training on women self-help groups management, book keeping, skills training etc., Apart from the regular visitors to the training centre, the school teachers, noon meal workers, Panchayat presidents, masons are provided training through Gramalaya faculties. Last year alone, more than 1650 people were trained from Gramalaya Training Centre. As a result of the training provided by Gramalaya, these trainees go to their work places, villages, institutions as master trainers, facilitators, volunteers, peer educators to serve for the promotion of water and sanitation. The trainees gave feedback about the training methodology, how useful the training for their profession and gave feedback after effectively working in their field. As a result, more and more competency personnel and organizations are trained and developed by Gramalaya to work in the field of water and sanitation sector.
Centre for Toilet Technology and Training
Gramalaya has established a Toilet Technology cum Training Centre at its rural headquarters at Kolakudipatti village in Thottiam block in Tiruchi district. The Toilet technology center was established with the funding support from Water Partners International, USA as a part of its WATSAN project. The centre has display various models of toilets which could be used in the total Sanitation campaign in rural areas including eco-san models. The centre will if necessary provide training for representatives and field staff of Non Governmental Organizations and Government officials including block co- ordinators involved in the TSC programme.
The Centre also has models of both Water less toilets and toilets which require reduced intake of Water suitable to the coastal, tribal, rocky terrain, water-logging and models for urban areas. The centre has domestic toilet models ranging in price from Rs.150 to Rs.17500 which are also environment friendly. All models in the centre are based on the fact that they were successfully introduced in rural areas in various places in the district. Gramalaya also introduced child friendly toilets in municipalities and corporation areas. These child friendly toilets are situated adjacent to the regular toilets constructed by the City Corporation and maintained under the pay and use concepts by Womens Self-Help Groups, All Child Friendly Toilets are fully used by the neighborhood children.

The centre has facilities to provide training and demonstration – for nominal fees – of models in the centre for the benefit of NGO representatives and government officials involved in the Water Supply, Health and Sanitation fields. The center has miniature models of School toilets which are suitable for primary and middle schools in rural areas. Similarly the technology center also has models of toilets which can be built in Anganwadis under the NBA programme. The models displayed in the Technology centre are only indicative and the center encourages in native, local specific models using local materials.
